Do you communicate properly?

Non-verbal language is very important because it expresses our true emotions; the body does not lie

Most people think that just by saying something is enough. Well, it isnt. Non-verbal language is very important because it expresses our true emotions; the body does not lie. It represents more than 60% of all interpersonal communication, making it a dominant force in business success. You could have your voice and words under control, but your body language including the tiniest facial expressions and movement can show your true thoughts and feelings.

Non-verbal language includes: our facial expressions, gestures, eye gaze, posture, and tone of voice.

Did you know? Most emotional expressions come naturally, from our system. Its a universal language because no matter the nationality, religion, idiom, gender or age, we can all make the exact same gesture in different situations, such as when we win; we raise both arms in the air, often with our fists clenched.

Add to this, our facial expressions that without saying a word; they can show how we truly feel; such as when we are happy, sad, angry, surprised, afraid, or worried. Even in silent we are all communicating something.

In business, youve got to be careful about what your body is expressing. Just by nodding or shaking your head without thinking can send a negative message to the other people. Or if you keep watching your watch or mobile when someone is speaking or rolling your eyesthat can be taken as if you dont care about the conversation or an attempt to undermine that persons credibility.

Thats why eye contact is important. No wonder why the phrase The eyes are the window to the soul. How many times have you said this? Look into my eyes and tell me where you have been if so, you already know how powerful keeping eye contact is. Because usually steady eye contact is often taken as a sign that a person is telling the truth and is trustworthy. It has an impact to maintain the flow of conversations.

Our posture also affects our communication. For example, when crossing your arms; if youre in a meeting or conference psychologically its a sign of rejection.

The tone of voice is so powerful that the same sentence said in different tone of voice can give a different meaning. For example: I am fine-using a strong tone of voice, listeners might interpret approval and enthusiasm. But using a hesitant tone of voice might convey disapproval and a lack of interest (wellhmmm...hmmmI am fine)

Add to this: the speed of speech, the volume, inflection and pace.
