Overview

This masterclass helps business leaders understand how to take action to manage nature related risks. It first enables participants to better grasp the different notions and terms used in the space, such as natural capital, biodiversity and ecosystem services. The Masterclass then explores how businesses are at risk of environmental change, in relation with both their impact and dependencies on nature. Finally, the Masterclass provides guidelines, frameworks and tools that will enable participants to build their own strategies to best manage their nature related risks and build resilience in their organisations.

Ben Mitchell
Ben Mitchell has a BSc in Zoology and a MSc in Environmental Technology, specialising in Environmental Economics. He has prior experience in Wildlife Conservation and research, having worked with multiple conservation, wildlife research, and wildlife rehabilitation organisations in regions such as South Africa, Ecuador, and Malaysia. His current focus is on Nature-related risks for businesses and financial institutions, drawing upon both his background in natural sciences and his recent expertise in environmental economics. Working at Climate Risk Services as a Natural Capital Analyst, Ben assists clients in
understanding and managing their dependencies, impacts, and risks from nature degradation.

Gerhard Mulder
Gerhards career in climate finance spanned both the public and private sector, having worked in consulting in Washington
DC, environmental markets on Wall Street, and for the Dutch government (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) to implement
the Kyoto Protocol. In 2005 he set up the climate finance desk at ABN AMRO Bank and positioned the bank as one of the
first global banks in the carbon market. In 2010 he joined Rabobank International to develop an electronic trading platform
for environmental commodities such as carbon credits and renewable energy certificates. In 2010 he switched back to the
public sector and joined a leading non-profit (IUCN) in the Netherlands. At IUCN he advised the Netherlands government on
developing financial instruments to attract private-sector climate finance. He co-founded Climate Risk Services (CRS) which
combines climate data, financial knowledge and sector expertise to develop climate and nature-related risk services to a range of public and private sector organizations. Some of their financial sector clients include leading banks, institutional investors and Sovereign Wealth Funds. Gerhard completed his MBA at Oxford in 2018 with distinction. He studied environmental economics and international affairs at Columbia University in New York, and Public Policy at the University of Amsterdam.
