Overview

IFRS 17 replaced IFRS 4 for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2023.

IFRS 4 had different accounting practices for similar insurance contracts. The objective of IFRS 17 is to ensure that insurers reflect the effect of economic changes in their financial statements in a timely and transparent way. This provides information about the current and future profitability of insurers, enables global comparability of the insurers financial statements and enhances the quality of financial information.

This comprehensive course focuses on the accounting approaches for the recognition and measurement of different types of insurance contracts, and the presentation, disclosure and transition requirements. It includes profitable and onerous contracts, contracts with direct participating features, discretionary participating features, reinsurance contracts and contracts in the general insurance business to which a simplified premium allocation approach may be applied. There will be use of illustrations, case studies and real-life financial statements to understand the components of insurance contract liabilities and application of IFRS 17.

A basic understanding of accounting as per any local GAAP is a pre-requisite.

Saket Modi is a London-based senior accounting instructor and consultant. He has designed and facilitated courses for participants from over 50 countries in North America, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific regions.

Saket specializes in financial reporting and analysis (IFRS/IPSAS), in particular IFRS 9 Financial Instruments and IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts. He has spent considerable time working, advising and training in matters relating to IFRS and IPSAS, and delivered workshops for financial institutions, corporates, public sector organizations, and professional services firms.

Saket regularly facilitates courses on IFRS for preparers and users of financial statements. He has written material on IFRS for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and was invited by the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) to present on IFRS 9 at their board meeting in New York. He has also recently written financial statements guidance on IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts for Croner-i, UKs leading information resource for tax and accounting professionals. In addition, he has spoken on international financial reporting topics at conferences and events organized by professional bodies and management associations.

Saket has previously worked with Lloyds Bank, Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. In addition to being a Chartered Accountant (India), Saket holds IFRS certificate from the ICAEW and IPSAS Diploma from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA). He has an MSc in Multinational Accounting and Financial Management from the UK and is a CFA charterholder.
