Overview

Clinical trials are the cornerstone for advancing medical knowledge by evaluating the efficacy and safety of health-related interventions (treatments, medical devices,...).

Standard or “fixed” trial designs generally do not allow for modifications to key design components during the trial, while on the other hand, adaptive designs allow for modifications to be made based on accumulative interim data. With flexibility introduced in the trial design, adaptive designs have thus the potential to improve the efficiency of the trial; however, several operational and statistical challenges must be addressed in order to preserve the validity and integrity of the trial.
